Family Papers, 1848-1892, bulk 1889-1892.

The papers consist largely of correspondence. Most of the letters are written to Free and concern either school affairs or Free's activities as a book agent for several school book publishers. Among the major correspondents are Charles N. Herreid, A.L. Riggs, J.A. Pickler, Daniel F. Bradley, Howard B. Grose, and various officials of the State Board of Regents. A folder in Mrs. Free's correspondence consists of letters written by Mrs. Free to her husband during various separations throughout their marriage. Items in the miscellaneous series include expense accounts, clippings, writings, financial investments, and school information. Part of the school information consists of questionnaires from several of the book publishers Free worked with that contain lists of teachers and pupil statistics for North and South Dakota schools. The education series contains assorted items on various colleges and related educational topics including the South Dakota Department of Public Instruction, teachers' bureaus, and teachers associations.
